Fighting not to Lose

Feb12
One of my biggest pet peeves in jiu jitsu is a practitioner whose sole purpose in a match is to “not get tapped out.” It’s even more annoying when people use it as a measure of success against their training partners. “I rolled with so and so for 10 minutes and he only caught me twice.” This thought process is extremely flawed and in no way an honest measure of one’s jiu jitsu skill, unless you were also attacking. Basically, if you spent the entire match fighting out of one submission after the next, you were not the better grappler […]

Here are some of my better moments competing in 2016.

Training Strategies for Quick Improvement

Sep15
Photo by Joseph Byron 2014 wasn’t just a big year in terms of weight loss for me, it was also a big year for my jiu jitsu. When I was trying to lose weight, my goal when I had any training session was to make sure that I rolled for 30 minutes at the very least. More was always okay, but nothing shorter than 30 minutes was the goal I set for myself. Training this way will guarantee that you are exhaling those calories and it will also ensure that your game improves. Increasing the amount you roll will by […]

Lessons I Learned After One Year At Gracie Tampa

Apr28
Originally posted on GracieTampa.com in September of 2013 Just about a year ago, me, my wife, and son moved to Tampa, FL. In part we wanted a new climate, plus her parents are down here. But another reason (probably the biggest for me) was to be able to train full-time with Rob Kahn, the owner and head instructor for Gracie Tampa. Since being here for almost a year, I’ve been told by my training partners and coaches (including Rob) that my Jiu Jitsu has improved by leaps and bounds. But why? The reasons might surprise you because they have very […]

How your ego kills your training

Apr09
Tapping out in the beginning of our jiu jitsu career is what makes us humble. Anyone who makes it to blue belt, the first adult belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, has tapped out a lot. They have felt what it’s like to try their hardest and fail over and over again. So naturally, after you start to get a little gym status as a new, respectable blue belt, you might start to coordinate your rolling to avoid certain people and gravitate toward certain others. This is what will inevitably lead to giant gaps in your training. Whereas the student who […]

Why train Gracie Jiu Jitsu?

Mar12
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a System of Self Defense Simply put, Jiu Jitsu is a system of ground fighting that utilizes grappling, joint locks and chokes. Jiu Jitsu is all about solving complex, evolving problems under extreme duress. Through this process, the Jiu Jitsu practitioner develops the skill to handle physical altercations with incredible speed and accuracy. Jiu Jitsu is the Great Equalizer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is famous for it’s claim that the smaller weaker person can defeat the larger stronger opponent. How? Using a mix of strategy, technique and timing, we clinch with our opponent, initiate a takedown, establish […]
